Where we are:
We are located at Ridge Soaring Gliderport in the exact center of the State of Pennsylvania, at the base of the Bald Eagle Ridge. The town of State College, (home of Penn State University) and University Park Airport is just 4 miles southeast of us. Lock Haven, where Piper aircraft where built for many years is 30 miles northeast of us. Ridge Soaring Gliderport is 9 miles south of Interstate highway 80, exit 158 along Pennsylvania Alternate route 220. The city of Altoona is 35 miles southwest of Ridge Soaring Gliderport.
Who we are:
Doris Grove and Tom Knauff began the gliderport and catalog business in 1975.
They have set nine world soaring records and more than 60 national records. They have written the most popular glider flight training manuals, are frequent speakers at soaring events and contributors of articles in Soaring magazine. They founded the youth scholarship program, Petersburg Wave camp, and the Senior Soaring Championships.
Tom's FAA CFI Revalidation Clinic is recognized as one of the very best, and the FAA awarded him the honor of Flight Instructor of the Year for the Eastern Region. He has been nominated several times for the prestigious Brewer Award given by the NAA to the outstanding Aviation Educator. Tom was National Open Class Champion in 1989 and the recipient of the Robert Kronfeld Trophy for the longest glider flight ever flown in a world soaring championship.
